Each year, during fall and winter, approximately 60 % of the Northern Pacific Humpback Whale population migrate from Alaska to Hawaii to calve and mate. The waters between Maui, Moloka‘i and Lana‘i form the epicenter of their safe area. Here, a humpback whale comes to say “aloha” in front of the West Maui Mountains, just South of Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.

During an expedition in the Silver Bank (Caribbean Sea, between the Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos) I was lucky enough to experience a " Valentine ". A valentine is the term used to describe the courting ritual between two whales. It was a delicate, mesmerizing performance that provided stunning photo opportunities!

I met this majestic humpback whale off Maui, Hawaii. She was swimming slowly towards me with her massive pectoral flipper completely out of the water, looking as she wanted to say “hi”.

This young Humpback Whale calf (in hawaiian “Keiki” means “child”) came to me and took a close look into the camera. Its mother awaited closeby, a few feet below. That was in Silver Bank, Caribbean Sea, between the Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos.

A “Competition Pod” is a group of surface-active whales that consists of a single female, actively being pursued by a group of males. Competition among the males for the female involves several intense, often violent behaviors, as each male tries to gain the position closest to her. During one of this “comp pod” off Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, a whale rised partially out of the water and took a look above the surface.

TAIL SLAPPING

Tail slapping occurs when a whale raises its tail out of the water, slapping it forcefully on the surface. When the tail hits the water, a loud resonant noise can be heard for miles. Humpback whales use this behavior to communicate. This shot was taken off Maui, Hawaii.

I’ve always dreamt about swimming with a whale and humpbacks are my favourite. In Silver Banks (Caribbean Sea, between the Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos) my dream came true!
